Nailed It!

The cute toe baring sandals are out and summer colors are cheerfully singing bright on our finger tips. Whether you treat yourself to a mani/pedi at your local nail salon or you spruce those puppies up at home, we are here to give you the DL on all things hot for your fingers and toes this summer.

First thing first, nail shapes. Believe it or not there are tons of popular and achievable nail shapes out there these days. Copy these shapes at home or bring this list with you to your local salon to get a copycat shape that suites you best.

Out of all the nail shape trends out there the one I would have to tell you, friend to friend to steer clear of are the "duck feet." No....just please....no.

Now onto the fun stuff! Colors colors and more colors! We compiled a chart with 2 different nail polish brands and the hottest colors out there this summer. The choice is up to you whether you want to save or splurge.

Save: Wet n' Wild- I personally love Wet n' Wild's Mega Last polishes. They last longer than most of those expensive brands, they have a huge array of colors, and the thick brush tip makes it super easy to swipe once on each nail and move onto the next. I usually use two coats of the Mega Last polish when painting my own nails and then a clear top coat. By doing this I am able to keep my nails chip free for about a week.

Splurge: Essie- Essie has what I believe is the greatest variety of colors and shades around. You are always able to find the perfect color to match that outfit for a hot night out on the town when shopping for Essie polishes. The only down side is that they are a bit pricey if you are purchasing them to DIY at home and to be honest, my nails chip a little sooner than I would like when I wear this brand.

Lastly, when in doubt every girl always has her "go to" polish color that she always leans towards and has grown super comfortable with. My personal favorite "go to" color would have to be Essie's Figi. This soft and neutral color is so versatile and always looks clean and classy on any freshly manicured pair of fingers or toes.

Which color and shaped nails will you be rockin this summer? What is your "go to" polish color?

How You Can Benefit...And A Free Giveaway!

Did you know that indoor humidity levels should ideally remain between 30 and 50 percent? I mean, it would make sense right? But I confess, I was not aware of this. Humidifiers are generally more sought after during the winter months due to the atmospheric humidity levels being so low and heating systems that tend to dry air out are in use. But they can really benefit you all year around in many ways.

1.) Helping Dry S kin. When the humidity is below average in your home or at work your skin tends to dry out much faster. Dry flakes and chapped lips are always something we try to avoid. By using a small humidifier in your bedroom or living room you can increase the humidity levels and soothe as well as repair dry irritated skin issues.  Low humidity levels also increase symptoms of eczema. Psoriasis, thyroid disorders, topical medications for acne, and cosmetics also cause dry skin that can be calmed and soothed with a humidifier.

2.) Treating Colds, Flu, and Seasonal Allergies. Just how dry air can dry out your skin, it can also cause irritation in the nose, nasal passages, sinuses, mouth, throat and eyes. Humidifiers assist in preventing nose bleeds in those prone to them when due to dry nasal passages, Therefore humidifiers benefit people with a cold, flu or allergies. They even serve as a preventative measure, reducing or eliminating viruses and bacteria that live and multiply in dry air.

3.) Ease Asthma In Adults And Children. If you or someone that you know does have this condition please check with a doctor before using a humidifier but it is said that with a clean humidifiers you may use it in your benefit to free the air of asthma irritants.

Our favorite humidifier on the market right now has to be the drop humidifiers that you can find at Crane. They work like a charm and are sleekly designed to be a perfect fit in any room of your home. It's 360 degree mist nozzle and variable control settings make it easy to use and its auto safety shut off is perfect when using this in your little ones room.
(P.S. They have adorable animal humidifiers for the kiddos, like this little pup!)

Mexican Black Bean Spaghetti With Avocado Lime Sauce

This Sunday I did my usual meal prep for the week. My Sunday meal preps usually consist of cutting up veggies, spiralizing my zucchini, and throwing together a big batch of something healthy and yummy to bring to work with me for lunch. This week I made something extra special because I was working with a product that I have never worked with before, and it turned out to be delicious and healthy to boot!
Check out my Mexican Black Bean Spaghetti recipe with Avocado Lime Sauce

What You Need:

-Black Bean Spaghetti (amount depends on how many people you are cooking for)
side note: black bean spaghetti is made of ONLY black beans and water...no artificial NOTHING. Gluten free and vegan too!
-Corn
-Diced Tomatoes
-Kale
-1 clove garlic
-fresh lime juice from 3 limes
-1/2 of a ripe avocado
-pinch sea salt and pepper
-1/4 cup cilantro (optional)
-1/2 of a jalapeño (optional)

What To Do:
-Cook pasta according to package
-Once pasta is done cooking, drain it and put it into a large container
-Sauté kale in a pan with olive oil.

-Add corn and tomatoes and keep on low heat for about 10 minutes.
-Top your cooked pasta with kale, corn, and tomatoes.

For Sauce: In a food processor, add garlic, lime juice, avocado, sea salt and pepper, cilantro and jalapeño. Blend until smooth consistency.
-If you are dividing this up for lunch later in the week, put pasta in each Tupperware bowl.
-Add Avocado Lime sauce the morning of or the night before you plan on taking your meal.
(If you are reheating the pasta add sauce at the end. I would not heat the sauce)

Enjoy!

Have you ever tried black bean pasta before?

What's Cookin Good Lookin?

I have a confession....I love trying out new recipes! Especially healthy ones. Going to the health food store and the farmers market always inspire me to cook up something new and delicious in the kitchen. In order for me to make my way around the kitchen and achieve a successful meal as an end result I need to have certain items in my kitchen at all times.

1.) A cool and sexaayyy apron- When your looking good you feel good right?! So why not wear an awesome rockin apron and get this party started! My absolute favorite place to get a spicy little apron is from Sin In Linen. If you haven't checked them out yet YOU MUST! Their products are awesome and they carry everything from bedding to Skull kitchen linens to beach towels. Grab the Skull Apron that I am in love with and have been rockin in the kitchen.

2.) Wooden Spoons - These puppies are so old but have lasted FOREVER. They are just super amazing to have because they are incredibly durable and don't melt if you leave them in the pot or pan for too long....eeek! You can find a great set for an amazing price HERE

3.) Hot Mits - I love the silicone hot mitts that I got from Crate and Barrel which of course they do not have in stock anymore but you can find similar ones HERE. They are great because you can't burn holes in them and they keep your hands super protected.

4.) Rubber Based Bowls - My rubber based no skid bowls are awesome. They are a great way to prevent spills and accidents in the kitchen and also come in the perfect sizes for any recipe. Find similar ones HERE

5.) A Good Casserole Dish - Casseroles are always a perfect and hearty meal to make whether it is in the summer or winter seasons. You always need a good sized and trust worthy casserole dish that you know will stand the test of time. I love my Corningware casserole dishes and baking set. Their products are trust worthy and work great.

6.) Pans, Pot, Griller- A good set of pots, pans, and at least one grill pan is a must in the kitchen. Pots and pans are definitely worth the splurge because in this case you do get what you pay for. HERE is a great pot and pan set for a great price.

7.) Food Processor- I love my food processor. It is great for making anything from pesto sauce to oat flour. It really is a great product to have, especially if you are into making healthy foods at home without all the artificial crap in it that you would find in the stores. I have THIS ONE and it works amazing, I recommend it to everyone.

8.) Blender- Smoothies....need I say more? This is another product where you really want to make sure that you invest in quality. A poor quality blender is useless and will just sit in your pantry and collect dust. If you get one that works well you will be using this baby all the time and coming up with really creative and delicious meals and beverages. THIS ONE is awesome and although it may be a tad pricey it is worth every penny.

What are your must haves for the kitchen and/or what is on your list of things to get for your kitchen?

Routines Part I: Morning Madness

There are days where I am running around like a toddler who ODed on pixie sticks. Running from one place to the next with no signs of slowing down. As mentioned in yesterday's post, I am a woman of many hats as I'm sure you are too. In order for me to wear these said hats and not loose my head in the process (because what good would that do?!) I have a routine, a way to organize and prepare myself day to day without fear of crashing and burning like little Peter the pixie stick popper!

1) If you wake up to an alarm and have to be somewhere by a certain time in the a.m. stick to a routine so that you aren't tearing through your house like the Tasmanian devil. Don't end up spilling coffee on your new white blouse, wearing 2 different shoes, and rockin that green smoothie in your hair because sleepy eyed little you conveniently forgot to put the lid in the blender, it's just not a good look...trust me.

How my morning routine usually looks:
-When the alarm goes off, get out of bed. Even if that means putting your alarm on the other side of the room so you have to get up and turn it off, get up! There is no point in sticking to a good routine unless you are going to follow it.

-Make coffee (which was prepared last night, just push the start button)
-Hop in the shower, get a cup of coffee and let the dogs out. Do hair, makeup, and get dressed (outfit picked out night before) let the dogs in and feed and water them.
-Make bed (yes, the bed is made every day, a habit my mother instilled in me every day since I was young)
-Make my breakfast smoothie (recipes found HERE), grab lunch from the fridge that was prepped on Sunday, and pour the rest of the coffee into a thermos to bring with me on my commute to work.
-Bags are packed and ready to grab and go, and just like that, out the door!

Meal prep-Sweet Potato Quinoa Protien Bowl With Avacado Lime Sauce Found HERE

Now I completely understand that everyone has different home circumstances and every ones routine will look a little different, whether you live alone, with children, with an elderly family member. I get it. But by trying to prepare yourself for the day as best as you can so you aren't running around like a mad woman saves you a ton of energy and a ton of time and makes your morning run much smoother and easier.

How do you save time and energy in the morning. What do you think you can do differently moving forward?

You Need To Know Something....

We have known each other for quite some time now and it is about time you knew a few things about me, the voice behind Cupcakes & Crossbones.
Wife, daughter, sister, mommy to two pups (a beagle and a pitbull), friend, fashion designer for a major fashion house, owner of a children's boutique, blogger, and tattoo artist are some of the many hats that I wear (and I love each one dearly!).
I'm an avid believer in Sunday meal preps, sitting down to dinner as a family, and you will always catch me blasting either rock/metal and 70's/80's music (especially Motley Crue) from my car's stereo.

My day does not begin until the last sweet drop of my first cup of coffee with cream and agave nectar passes my lips and I am a believer that a hot pair of shoes and good hair/makeup day can make anyone feel like a million bucks!

I am a newbie and lover of antigravity yoga and shuffled, leaped, and pirouetted my way through dance school from age 3 to 20.

Call me a girly girl if you will but quad riding and camping are a few things I love to do in my spare time. I can go on and on but I must leave some details to the imagination and more information to share with you as we continue this journey together. This is me and everything I do is with passion and heart. This is me.....

Sweet Potato and Kale Quinoa Protein Bowl With Avacado Lime Sauce

So recently I was browsing a few of my personal favorite blogs when I came across one that caught my interest right away. Shannon blogs over at The Glowing Fridge and her recipes are absolutely out of this world and super healthy. After scrolling through one after the other of mouth watering recipes I came across one that would be perfect for me to make on a Sunday and bring to work with me for the rest of the week for lunch. It's yummy, it's healthy, and it is perfect for anyone who does food preps on the weekends. So here you have it....

Sweet Potato Quinoa Protein Bowl with Avocado Lime Sauce:

What you Need:
  1. 2 large sweet potatoes (about 4 cups) cut into cubes
  2. 1 teaspoon olive oil
  3. pinch of sea salt and black pepper
  4. 1 cup uncooked quinoa (about 3 cups cooked)
  5. 2 cups water
  6. 1 tablespoon olive oil
  7. 1/2 of a red onion, finely diced
  8. 3 cups kale, stems removed and chopped
  9. 1 red bell pepper, diced (any color is fine) (I Omitted this as I do not like peppers)
  10. 1 15oz. can black beans, drained and rinsed
  11. pinch of sea salt and black pepper
  12. 1 clove garlic
  13. fresh lime juice from 3 limes
  14. 1/2 of a ripe avocado
  15. pinch sea salt and pepper
  16. 1/4 cup cilantro (optional)
  17. 1/2 of a jalapeño (optional)

What You Do:
  1. For Sweet Potatoes: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a medium bowl, toss around sweet potatoes with 1 teaspoon olive oil. Season with pinch of sea salt and black pepper.
  2. On a foil-lined baking sheet, spread out sweet potatoes evenly and bake for 30-35 minutes until edges are browned and potatoes are soft.
  3. For Quinoa: Meanwhile, place 1 cup quinoa and 2 cups water in a 1.5 quart saucepan, bring to boil. Reduce heat to simmer, covered, for 10-15 minutes, until soft. Fluff with fork.
  4. For Veggies: In another saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil on medium-high heat and add in red onion. Sauté onion for about 3 minutes, then throw in kale and red pepper. Add sea salt and black pepper, to taste. Sauté for about 3-5 more minutes and turn off heat. Fold in black beans and set aside.
  5. For Dressing: Meanwhile, in a blender or food processor, add garlic, lime juice, avocado, sea salt & pepper, cilantro and jalapeño. Blend until smooth consistency.
  6. Fold in cooked sweet potatoes to sauce pan with veggies. Serve warm or at room temperature, over quinoa, with avocado dressing on top! Enjoy!

So what do you think? I know I love this and have eaten it almost every day this week and I am still not sick of it. Try it out and let me know what you think. Oh and don't forget to stop over at The Glowing Fridge and say hi to Shannon.

Now back to business!
Today is a very special day as I had mentioned. Today we have one of my favorite bloggers guest posting for us. Her name is Kerry and she comes from all the way over at Till Then Smile Often blog.
Not only is she one of the sweetest most good hearted people that I know (check out her Be The Chang You Seek project) she also knows how to cook up some delicious mouth watering dishes!
So instead of me rambling on and on why don't you take a look for yourself....Take it away lady!

Thank you to Tori for letting me share her space today. I am Kerry and I blog over at Till Then Smile Often. The thing I love about salad is that you can use up all the ingredients in your house. Really just about anything can go into a salad! This one recently made it onto a plate and so I am glad to share it with you. When it is hot outside like it has been here, a salad is much preferred over turning on the stove.
Summer Strawberry Salad

Ingredients: 2 cups Romaine or Iceberg lettuce ~ 4 Large strawberries ~ 1-2 slices of onion, diced ~ 1/4 cup of cranberries ~ 4 oz grilled BBQ chicken ~ Tortilla Strips

Dressing: 2 TSP EVOO ~ 2 TSP Fig Infused Balsamic Vinegar ~ 1/8 TSP Minced Garlic ~ Pinch of Salt and pepper

Directions: Place the lettuce on the plate, top with the onion and strawberries. Sprinkle the cranberries and tortilla strips over the salad. Place the sliced grilled chicken on top and garnish with a sliced strawberry. Mix up the salad dressing and serve!

Camping Must Haves!

For the past five years, camping has been something that I do every year at least once during the summer with family and friends. Although I am certainly not a professional camper, I do know a thing or two as to what you MUST bring with you when you do plan on camping out.

Camping Must Haves:

1.) Tent- Well duh! But you really want to make sure that it is a good tent and not some cheapo flimsy thing. If it does rain you want it to hold up well and not leak which is why spraying the tent with water repellent spray before your trip is a very good idea too!

2.) Bug Spray- Whether it is our all natural bug repellent that we discussed yesterday, or a bottle of OFF! you NEED this or else you will get eaten alive. The aftermath of little mosquito's feasting on you is much worse than just grabbing a bottle of bug spray and spraying yourself down real quick.

3.) Cooler- This is another obvious must have as you are going to want to keep all of your food and drinks cool so that they do not spoil. Also bringing freezer Ziploc bags is a great idea as you will be able to divide foods up into sturdy bags and close them up safely without worrying about their original bag/box tearing and opening up or things leaking.

4.) Wipes- Wipes are always important. Whether you just want to wipe down and freshen up mid day or you need to wipe up a mess, these babies come in handy more than you would realize!

5.) Water Shoes- If you plan on going in a river or a lake you need these. Rivers have rocks that hurt to walk on bare foot and wearing flip flops is not even an option, unless you want to go back to your camp site minus 2 flip flops. I have tried to be thick headed and wear flip flops as well as go bare foot, I will never do that again.

6.) Beach Towel- Perfect for laying out or drying off after a dip in the river. Although this seems like an obvious item to add to your list, a lot of people do often forget it.

7.) Sun Screen- Do I really need to say anything? YOU NEED IT!

8.) First Aid Kit- This is super important to have. Although you are out to have fun you must remember, you are in the wild, it's better to be safe and prepared always.

9.) Fire Wood- Depending on what type of camping you are doing, if you are at a family/group camp site bring wood! The stores that are located on the campground have wood for you but it is ridiculously priced. Stop at a local store and pick up a few bundles to last you the night for way less.

What is on your camping must have list?

All Natural Flea & Tick Repellent-For Pets and You!

With the warm summer days upon us it is very important to go out and have fun, yet while having fun it is also very important to make sure that you as well as your pets are protected against fleas and ticks.

As most of us know, ticks are extremely dangerous, especially those that carry lime disease. If not caught quickly this disease could lead to a number of life threatening complications.
Fleas feed on their host, multiply like crazy, and are a complete nuisance.
For these reasons it is very important to repel these little terrors. How do you do that naturally and for pennies? This is how....

Repellent For Pets:
For pets, add 1 cup of water to a spray bottle that you can pick up from your local dollar store.
Next add 2 cups of distilled white vinegar. (Ticks hate the smell and taste of vinegar, and will be easily be repelled by just this ingredient.)
Add two spoonfuls of vegetable or almond oil, (these both contain sulfur and another natural tick repellent).
To make a repellent that will also keep away fleas, mix in a few spoonfuls of lemon juice, citrus oil, or peppermint oil, which will all repel ticks and fleas while also creating a scented repellent.
Spray this formula onto the pet's dry fur, staying away from areas such as the eyes, nose, and mouth. When outdoors for an extended period of time, spray this solution on two to three times per day. When pets are outdoors to use the restroom only for example, spray the solution onto the animal's coat once per day.

Repellent For Humans:

In a spray bottle, mix 2 cups of distilled white vinegar and 1 cup of water.
To make a yummy smelling solution so you do not smell like vinegar all day, add 20 drops of your favorite essential oil or bath oil. (Eucalyptus oil is a soothing scent that works as a tick repellent, while peppermint and citrus oils leave a strong crisp scent that also repel ticks.)
After mixing the solution, spray onto clothing, skin, and hair before going outdoors.
Reapply every four hours to keep ticks away and examine the skin and hair when returning home to make sure no ticks are on the body.

Now go out there, enjoy your camping, hiking, and other fun outdoor activities without so much of the worry.

How do you defend yourself and/or pets against fleas and ticks?

Cast iron skillets are great to have but cleaning them could be a pain. All these does and don'ts for cast iron skillets is enough to have your throw your hands in the air and forget them all together.
With these simple instructions you can clean and care for your skillet without the headache and hassle that most instructions would normally put you through!

What You Need
 Cast iron skillet
Sponge or stiff brush
Clean, dry cloth or paper towels
Vegetable oil or shortening
Kosher salt (optional)
Stove (optional)

Instructions

1. Clean the skillet immediately after use while it is still hot or warm. Avoid soaking the pan or leaving it in the sink, or it could rust.
2. Wash the skillet by hand using hot water and a sponge or stiff brush. Do not use the dishwasher, soap, or steel wool, as these could strip the pan's seasoning.
3. To remove stuck-on food, scrub the pan with a paste of coarse kosher salt and water. Food residue may also be loosened by boiling water in the pan.
4. Thoroughly towel dry the skillet or dry it on the stove over low heat.
5. Using a cloth or paper towel, apply a light coat of vegetable oil, coconut oil or melted shortening to the inside of the skillet. Buff to remove any excess.
6. Store the skillet in a dry place.

Note:
  • Remove rust by rubbing it with half a raw potato and a bit of baking soda. It may be necessary to re-season the pan after cleaning.
How do you normally clean your cast iron skillets? Has care for one deterred you from purchasing one?

For Your 4 Legged Friend

When it comes to my little 4 legged babies I want nothing but the best for them, especially when it comes to what they eat. Although both my pitbull and beagle would probablly eat anything you put infront of them, I like to look into the products that I feed them and make sure its both healthy and nutritious.

After much searching and investigating I found a product that is not only healthy but organic too!
Newman's Own Organics Premium Pet Food is a thumbs up for me. Newman's Own pet foods are produced without the use of herbicides, pesticides or artificial fertilizers, are not irradiated and do not contain chemical additives or preservatives; because honestly who would want to feed all that to their baby?
Newman's Own Organics Premium Pet Food has a line for both cats and dogs and includes wet food, dry food, and treats. You can find their treats at PETCO or Petsmart, their food at most local grocery stores, and you can find all of their products on the web at places like Amazon.
So get out there and show your pet how much you love em and pick up some Newman's Own Organics Premium Pet Food. I know my pooches loved it!

This was 2 minutes after I mixed Newman's Own advanced dog formula (dry food) and their chicken and brown rice formula (wet food). Licked clean!

Has your pet ever tried Newman's Own Organic Premium Pet Foods? What pet food do you usually buy?

Increase Your Health, Decrease The Guilt!

Ever read a recipe and think to yourself 'I wonder how I can make this healthier?' I know I do all the time. Today I will anwer that question for you and show you a super easy list of substitutions that you can use in your recipes to increase the health and decrease the guilt.

1 cup sour cream = 1 cup cottage cheese / or 1 cup plain fat free Greek yogurt
-This replacement is a great source of calcium and protein
-It is much lower in fat and calories
-It works great with dip recipes
TIP: If you are using cottage cheese as a replacement be sure to puree it in a blender for best results. You can also use Greek yogurt instead of mayo in chicken, tuna, and egg salads!

1 cup butter = 1 cup pureed avocado / or banana
-This works best for desserts and baking
-By substituting you are able eliminate saturated fat (bad fat) and replace it with healthy fat
-Reduces calories

1 cup flour = 1 cup whole wheat flour
-This works great for breads
-White flour is processed, whole wheat flour is not.
TIP: It is sometimes necessary to increase the liquid in a recipe when using this as a substitute

1 cup sugar = 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
-A great replacement for cookies, cakes, and breads
-This reduces calories
TIP: You may need to decrease the liquid in the recipe when using this substitution

1 whole egg = 2 egg whites
-This lowers cholesterol
