What's So Special About Coconut Oil?!

'What's so special about coconut oil?' is a question that I often hear every time I mention to someone that they should incorporate it into their daily routine. So today I am here to answer that question for you and give you a few tips on how to use this wonderful oil and explain why it is so wonderful!

The fat in coconut oil actually helps improve your cholesterol. It helps prevent heart attack and stroke and even heart disease. This oil is 92% saturated fat! That's the good fat. It’s the type of fat that holds strong bonds that are resistant to higher temperatures. This makes them safer to cook with and bake with and also makes it less likely to attract free radicals.

    Fix A Bummed Out Belly

Belly aches are a pain; and with BBQs and holiday parties going on now you may be more prone to them now more than ever. Here are a few tips and tricks to give that belly ache a kick to the curb and get you feeling 100% again!

     Bloat and Burps

Look for something with simethicone. It breaks up belly bubbles fast. That combined with walking around will get you feelin A ok again. Try Gas-X or Mylanta as an over the counter remedy.

     Heartburn

Rolaids, Tums, and Maalox all do the trick for this one. Try using liquid versions if you need a quick fix.

     Constipation

Stimulant laxatives work in about 6-12 hours but do not use if you plan on going out. Try stool softeners like Colace for a gentler approach.

     Diarrhea

Wait 48 hours to treat this with antidiarrheals in order to flush out your system of any infections or bugs. In the mean time try guzzling 2 quarts of Gatorade or pedialyte so that you do not dehydrate.

     IBS
If your stomach pains come and go and usually goes hand in hand with bloat, gas, and constipation or diarrhea then you may have a gluten allergy or IBS. See your doctor so that he/she can monitor your eating patterns and get a solution to the issue.

What's your go to method for treating a bummed out belly?

    Get That House Summer Ready!

BBQ's, Partying, or just relaxing in the yard on a nice sunny day are all things to look forward to this summer. Yet, in order to relax and prep yourself for all of your outdoor activities, you may want to check out this to do list for getting the outside of your home clean and ready for summer.

-Clean the walkway- A little sweeping and power washing goes a long way!

-Tend to your front door- Fix gaps with caulking. Use paint to touch up any chipping around your door, and who knows...maybe even paint your front door a new and cheerful color!

-Prep windows- Fix gaps with caulking. Fill up 2 buckets, one with 1 cup vinegar, 1 cup ammonia, and 1 gallon hot water. Wash your windows with the vinegar/ammonia solution first then with water only. After, wipe down with a squeegee.

-Check Those Fences- Make sure fence posts are sturdy and not wobbling in the ground when you give it a little shake.

-Clean up your driveway- Sweep and powerwash. For black top try Blocktop Ultra Maxx 1000 Driveway Filler and Sealer. For Concrete try Quickrete Concrete Crack Seals. That baby will look good as new!

-Spruce up grass- Remove dead grass and twigs with a rake. Fill in bald patches on your grass with fresh grass seed.

-Clean out the Gutters- take out the ladder and scoop out all the dead leaves and twigs in your gutter. Next rinse them with a blast of water from the hose and you are good to go!

-Hose Down Air Conditioning Condenser- Shut your electric panel and clear out any items lodged in the unit. Wash down all the coils with a hose.

-Wash the Cushions- Outdoor cushions tend to take quite the beating. Use dish detergent, warm water and a scrub brush if fabric is not removable and scrub away. If fabric is removable, throw it in the washing machine.

-Clean the deck- Sweep and powerwash. Also if necessary add another coat of sealer.

-Scrub down the gas grill- Disconnect the gas line. Wash and scrub grates, burners, and drip tray in warm soapy water. Wipe down the grills exterior then put all items back in place and attache gas line.

Do all of this and you will be in tip top shape and ready to host all of your fabulous BBQ's and gatherings outdoors this summer!

    Home Remedies!

Aching, hurting, or feeling uncomfortable? Here are some home remedies that are sure to get you feeling back to your self again.

    1. Epsom Salts-dry skin
Smooth those rough elbows or heels by mixing 1/2 cup of Epsom salt with a 1/2 cup of water and make a paste. Exfoliate the rough areas by massaging the mixture into your rough areas and rinse with warm water for smooth skin!

    2. Honey-blemishes
Honey works as an antiseptic and can stop the growth of bacteria that causes breakouts. Wear your dab of honey under makeup or naturally to help get rid of unsightly blemishes.

    3. Massages-relieve anxiety
If you feel stress or a burst of anxiety just massage the pressure point between your thumb and index finger. Squeeze and release the muscle for 30 seconds for quick and natural stress relief.

    4. Cheese and walnuts-cramping
Nibble on 1 oz low fat cheese and a few walnuts an hour before bed. With the magnesium and calcium from the cheese and the melatonin from the walnuts your muscles can relax and you can get a peaceful nights rest.

    5. Baking soda-bad breath
Combine a cup of water with 1 tsp of baking soda. Swish it around your mouth and spit it out. The baking soda not only helps fight that nasty bacteria but it also helps combat dry mouth.

    6. Lentils, cashews, pumpkin seeds, pecans, and low fat yogurt-healthy hair growth
The lack of certain nutrients can lead to hair loss and dry scalp. At least one of these zinc filled treats every day can get that beautiful mane growing healthy and glow again!

    Chalk It Up To Chalk

Chalk is not for just chalk boards and sidewalks anymore. Here are some tips on what you can use those dollar store packs of chalk for other than just doodling and lesson plans.

    1. Keep silver shiny by sticking a few pieces of chalk in your jewelry box and/or utensil draw to help absorb excess moisture which can lead to tarnishing. Replace chalk ever few months.

    2.  Draw a straight line by cutting a piece of yarn longer than your ruler and rub some chalk on it. secure the ends with painters tape and snap the yarn down on the item that you want to draw the straight line on. After you do what you got to do erase the chalk line with a bit of water or a cloth

    .

    3. Fix a sticky lock by rubbing some chalk on the top and bottom of your key. the powder acts as a drying agent, stops any friction and absorbs the oil  that can trap dust and dirt.

    4. Repel ants by drawing thick chalk lines around the problem areas perimeter. Ants hate the calcium carbonate in chalk and/or the feel of the particles underfoot.

    5. Make washable paint by sealing a few colored chalk sticks in a ziplock bag and crush with a rubber mallet. Add about 1 tsp of water at a time until the powder turns into a paint consistency. Use a paint brush and go crazy! Paint windows or even trees to point to the location of your garage sale!

Did you know there were this many tricks for chalk?!

    Myth Buster-Baby Oil

Myth - Does shaving with baby oil really help keep hair from growing back longer than shaving without it?

The test - I shaved my legs the "traditional" way and had full on stubble 2 days later :(

Then I shaved my legs with baby oil and I'm on day 3 with very minimal stubble and soft legs :)

By shaving with baby oil gel it not only pprovides a closer shave with no nicks and bumps but it is better for the razor blade making it last longer.  Baby oil does not contain any alcohol, so its better for your skin and seals in moisture and it doesn't run off in the shower. This not only saves my shave but it saves time and money, win win win!

I would say this myth is busted and it really works!

Try it out and let me know if it worked for you!

    Palmer's Cocoa Butter

    Stretch marks- AAAHHHH!
I'm sure we have all heard how cocoa butter can help fight these dreaded lines during pregnancy, and I would say this REALLY WORKS!

I gained well over 60 pounds during my pregnancy (I liked my Oreos), and to my surprise only have one small stretch mark to show for it. Now I'm not 100% sure if it was the Cocoa Butter or just lucky genes, but why risk not using it?

At least twice a day I used Palmer's Cocoa Butter massage lotion and Palmer's Tummy Butter. Towards the end of my pregnancy I found myself getting lazy with buttering up, but you can't let yourself!!!! Stay strong, use the butter, and hopefully it will work for you too!

Have you used Palmer's Cocoa Butter during your pregnancy? Did it work for you?

    Turkey/Quinoa Chili

Recently I have mentioned how I was beginning a gluten free diet HERE. I have been doing a lot of research and have come across some great recipes that are not only gluten free, but delicious. Out of all the meals that I have found so far though, one stands out to me the most that was shared by a co-worker of mine, turkey quinoa chili. I love the taste, it fills me up, and it is really great to make on a Sunday and have a whole bunch left over for the week to take to lunch or have for dinner.

    What You Need:

    1 whole white onion chopped
    5 cloves of garlic chopped
    2 large cans crushed tomatoes
    1 large can diced tomatoes
    2 Tbsp Tomato Paste
2 Tbsp chili powder (more to taste)
3 Tbsp cumin (more to taste)
A few shakes of Red Pepper seeds
    Salt/Pepper to taste
    1 lbs ground turkey
1 cup cooked quinoa (quick quinoa cooking instructions HERE )
    1 can chick peas (optional)
    2 cans kidney beans
    1 can black beans

     What You Do:
Saute Onions until translucent in 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
Add garlic, stir for a 2 minutes
Add Cumin/Chili Powder/a few shakes of Red Pepper, stir for a few moments
    Add Turkey and brown
Add all 3 cans of tomatoes and paste
Bring it up to a slow boil and then let it simmer for a bit
    Add all the beans (rinsed)
    Let simmer
    Add cooked quinoa
Just let it simmer for like 25 minutes or so and then add more spices as necessary. If you notice that it is getting a bit dry, add some chicken stock.
Once done cooking spoon chili into a bowl.
Top it with a little bit of cheese, a dollop of plain fat free Greek yogurt and you are good to go!

Is this a recipe that you think is worth trying?

    Yummy Healthy Fruit Dip

Have you ever purchased or made a fruit dip just to realize that it was full of sugars and/or chemicals that you can't even pronounce? Well now it is time to put an end to that! I have recently created a delicious fruit dip that is not only inexpensive, easy, and healthy, but also husband and kid approved!

    What You Need:
    A small dip bowl
    Plain Greek yogurt
    Cinnamon
    Honey

    What You Do:
Combine all ingredients in your dip bowl to taste
    Cut up a few apples
    Enjoy!

How easy is that! It's a great way to sneak some fruit into your kid's (and husband's) diet without canceling out the nutritional value with sugars and all that bad stuff!

What do your homemade fruit dips consist of?
