Living Happy

Dictionary.com's definition of happy:

happy [hap-ee]

1. delighted, pleased, or glad, as over a particular thing:
to be happy to see a person.
2. characterized by or indicative of pleasure, contentment, or joy:
a happy mood; a happy frame of mind.

We all want to be happy, right? Although certain events or situations in life do not always result in happiness, it is possible to live a happy life overall. Here are a few Do's and Don'ts that always work if you are looking for and wanting to travel on the path of happiness.

DON'T:

-Don't hang around negative people - This is huge. I know sometimes this is hard to avoid if you are at work and have to be around certain people throughout the day. It is easy though to pick who you want to be involved with outside of the work place and even who you spend any spare time with at work. They say that you end up picking up habits and/or traits of the people who you spend the most time with throughout the day. The last thing you want is to start taking on the same views and characteristics of someone who is always negative about everything.

-Don't say yes if you don't mean it- If you can't make it to a certain event, you can't carry out a certain favor, whatever it is that you know you are not able to do, do not say yes to doing it. This usually causes lots of issues and even sometimes breaks up relationships with friends and leaves you to seem unreliable. You don't want that.

-Don't hold grudges- Its easier said than done, this I know but it only ends up hurting you in the end. Once you let go of your grudge that you are holding on to, it is amazing how much weight you will feel lifted off your shoulders.

-Don't live in the past- Living in the past prevents you to live in the present and we don't want that. You want to live for the present and work towards your goals in the future. Learn from the past but don't live their. The past is the past for a reason. Been there, done that, moving on!

-Don't compare your life and accomplishments to others- We are all at different points in our lives and have all chosen different paths. Never compare yourself to others. You don't know what their entire journey was all about, and people will always have a different view of what they consider life accomplishments. There will always be someone out there who is ahead and always someone out there who is behind. Don't worry about them. Focus on you.

DO:

-Learn from your mistakes- Don't make the same mistakes over and over again and expect different results. We all know what that is called. Learn from your mistakes. We all make them and that is fine, it's part of life. As long as you are able to take something away from it and teach yourself what you could do differently in the future to improve and not make that mistake again, that's what important.

-Try again - If at first you don't succeed, try and try again- We all fall in life at one point or another. Just get back up and try again. It's all about how you bounce back from the fall that is important, not the fall itself.

-Keep in touch with those who matter- People don't talk anymore. It's sad. Whether it's texting, tweeting, facebooking, emailing, stop! Pick up the phone or take a drive out to visit loved ones, ones that have been their for your falls and helped you back up. Those who helped you learn from your mistakes. The ones who saw you in your past and still love you, no matter what! Keep in touch with them, call them, visit them, send them fun snail mail cards just to say hi. These people are the ones who are important in our lives, the ones who hold value in our lives and are the people who give us those happy memories. Don't forget about them.

-Wake up every day thinking something positive- Tell yourself something great is going to happen when you wake up. This helps our day unfold in a more positive and productive way. It works! Try it, I dare you.

What do's or don'ts do you have for finding happiness? What lessons have you learned?

Apple Caramel Sangria

Fall is coming and I couldn't be more excited. Fall is definitely one of my favorite seasons. I love waking up to the cold crisp air and throwing on a cozy sweater with my pumpkin latte in hand (the pumpkin thing is so cliche I know, but how can you not love it?!)
Don't worry, I don't plan on throwing a ton of pumpkin this and pumpkin that at you today, today I am going to show you a quick and easy adult beverage to take the chill out of your bones on a chilly fall evening.

What You Need:
1 bottle of pinot grigio wine
 1 cup caramel vodka
 6 cups apple cider
2 apples chopped with the core removed
Cinnamon stick (optional)
  What You Do:
Combine your wine, caramel vodka, and apple cider in a large pitcher.
 Toss in your chopped apples.
Serve the sangria over ice and garnish with a cinnamon stick.

*Note: Make a tasty mocktail by pouring a glass of apple cider, drizzling some caramel into the glass, and add some chopped apples. Garnish with a cinnamon stick

What are some of your favorite beverages for fall?

Time Saving And Organizing Tips

Life can get hectic and crazy at times and it always seems like there is never enough time in the day. With these simple and easy tips though, I guarantee that you will find yourself more prepared and find a little bit of "me time" to squeeze in the day which we all need in our life!

1.) Meal Prep- I've said it once and I'll say it again. Meal prepping totally saves time and money. Plan out your weekly meals and preparing them on a Sunday or day of your choice. You not only end up eating healthier and having a little extra time to spare, but you also don't over buy at the grocery store.
Check out My Fridge Food. This is a great tool to use for recipes. You simply check off ingredients that you have around the house and it will pull up meals that you can make with those ingredients.

2.) Peapod- Need groceries and have absolutely no time to go to the store? Head over to Peapod. You type in your zip code and then select groceries that you need and someone delivers it right to your door. This is also great for around the holidays like Thanksgiving when grocery stores are over flowing with long lines and cranky customers.

3.) Planners- I know I know. If you are familiar with this blog you know I mention these bad boys all the time. But they do work wonders. Never miss an appointment and schedule your day accordingly by marking down all important engagements and times of events once one arises. Using highlighters as mentioned in yesterdays post is great if you have children. Just assign a color to each member of the family and highlight each persons event in their color so that you know who needs to go where and when.

4.) Notepad- Have a notepad and pen in your nightstand so that if you are anything like me and are about to go to bed and remember one last thing that you have to do just jot it down in your notes so that you aren't up thinking about it all night. It's also great to have a "to do" list on especially busy days so that you don't forget a task. Cross it off your list when you are done and feel incredibly accomplished!

5.) Dry Erase Board- Put a dry erase board on your fridge so that when someone in your household notices that you are running low on an item or if they want you to pick something up from the store, they can write it on your board. This eliminates a) complaining about "why didn't you get me this" and b) You wont have to run out to the store AGAIN for the second time.

6.)  Schedule "You Time" - Everyone needs a little time to themselves whether it is reading a book or getting a manicure. Don't forget to pencil in time for yourself. You need this, you deserve this!

7.) Ask For Help- Don't be afraid to ask for help. We can't always finish everything that we have to do, and that is perfectly fine. There is nothing wrong with asking someone in your home or a friend for a reasonable favor.

What are some time saving and organizing tips that you incorporate into your everyday life?

Fashionable Office Must Haves

Whether it is your home office or your office away from home, there are a few necessities that one should always have readily available to get your werk did.
Who ever said that office supplies have to be boring and dull? My theory is that you must surround yourself (especially while working) with pretty things that make work a little more fun and a lot more stylish!
Surround yourself with inspiration with these eight fashionable office must haves.

No one wants their pens and pencils rolling all over the place. This adorable mint and white three compartment caddy is perfect for for storing desktop tools and writing implements.

How adorable is this Kate Spade business card holder?
Use this card holder to carry around your business cards in a professional and stylish way.

So if you come around these parts often, you know that I am planner obsessed. I don't know what I would do without my planner. It is the only thing that lets me know were and when I have to be somewhere and prevents me from double booking appointments. Aside from my love for May Design's May Book I am also loving this Kate Spade agenda book.

These folders are so adorable and fun! These are a super convenient way to keep your papers in order and they are great for organizing by pattern and labeling their tabs.

My Hi-liters and my agenda book go hand in hand. I organize by color each event of the day ex) Pink=my personal appointments, Purple=blog stuff, green=work stuff etc. (Please tell me I'm not the only crazy lady that does this) Not only does it make pointing out appointments easier for me but helloooo these are scented hi-liters, I feel like a kid again and it makes reminding me to a pay a bill a little nicer since bills=orange, and I love the smell of oranges =P

I am a note book hoarder. There, I said it. I need all the notebooks in the world, but especially these two. One says 'love it' and the other says 'live it.' They are perfect for keeping one in my purse to jot down ideas on the go and one in my office. Stylish, fun, and practical....I like it!

Believe it or not, this is an adorable anchor flash drive key chain. Pull the bottom rubber part off and plug that baby into your computer. On the go? Save important info to your flash drive and bring it with you if you are working in multiple locations.

Last but not least, I need this in my life. Candles are so relaxing and soothing and perfect for calming nerves when you are working by reducing stress (lavender works great for this). I always have a candle in my home office, for ambiance and relaxation purposes.

What are your office must haves?

Spaghetti Squash

Believe it or not, ever since I was young I had always loved spaghetti squash. My mom would make it for me all the time and I never payed attention to how she did it because...well...she made it so good, why would I pass up hers to make it on my own? PS Thanks mom!
Anywayz, I'm a big girl now and I'm not living with my momma which means I need to prepare my own foods ugghh. Yet, after realizing how simple it is to make spaghetti squash, I make it all the time now. Even though something about mom's cooking is so much better, I think my cooking comes in a close second =P

Need:
-2 Spaghetti Squash
(this made more than enough for lunch for the week)
-Cutting Board
-Big SHARP Knife (be careful!)
-Fork
-Baking Sheet
-Greased Tin Foil

What You Do:
-Pre heat oven to 350 degrees
-Carefully slice your squash in half
-Put your tin foil over your baking sheet and lightly spray it with cooking spray
-Place those babies sliced part down on your baking sheet and put it in the oven for 30 minutes
-After they are done cooking (a sharp knife should be able to slice through the skin with little resistance) flip them over with your oven mitts still on.
-Use your fork to graze over the top pulling out all the seeds in each piece.
-Once the seeds are removed, use your fork again to scrape away at the inside of the squash
-This is the yummy stuff that you want to put in a bowl or Tupperware. As you scrape you will be creating yummy strands of squash that look like, you guessed it....spaghetti!

Toppings:
You can top your squash with anything from marinara sauce to grilled chicken...whatever tickles your fancy.
My favorite way to top it is by mixing in some butter, garlic, salt and pepper, and a little bit of ricotta. Oh my gosh is it delicious!!!
Enjoy!

Have you made spaghetti squash before? Are you as big of a fan of it as I am?

P.S. Head over HERE to see who our May Designs May Book giveaway winner was!
We will contact you shortly with all the details if you were the big winner.

DIY Designer Plate & Mug For Pennies!

I am a sucker for home decor and lately I have been loving the whole gold trend that has been going on for quite some time now. My most recent find that I have been totally head over heels for has been Kate Spade's gold accented decor. Specifically their polka dot can cup  and their "odds and ends"square dish. Even though I did fall in love with them, I was not willing to spend a total of $80 on both (Can cup=$37.99, Plate=$40.00). So what do we do when we don't want to spend a fortune yet still accessorize with these items? We make our own of course!

Need:
Plain White Plate ($1 dollar store)
Paper Plate

What You Do:
-Squirt a little black paint onto one section of your paper plate and then put some gold paint on another section of your paper plate.
-Make sure your white dollar store plate is completely clean and dry.
-Paint the inside text of the plate first in black with a thin paint brush. (I did this in 2 coats and it came out nice and bold)
-Don't worry if you make a mistake because if you wipe it up right away with a wet paper towel, the paint should all come off. Remember too, this plate was made to look like it was handwritten and not perfect so get wild with it!
-Paint the edges surrounding your white plate gold. You may need to do about 3 coats to really get it nice and solid.
-Once the gold paint is completely dry, use the back of your paint brush to scrape up the inner edges to make them a bit more straight and neat.
-Let your plate dry and place it by the door to hold keys, or use it in your room on your night stand to place little "odds and ends"
*Do not use this plate to eat off of. It is for decoration purposes only.

Need:
Paper Plate
Plain White Coffee Mug ($1 dollar store)

What You Do:
-Place some gold paint in your paper plate.
-Make sure your mug is completely clean and dry.
-Use your circular sponge brush and dip it in the gold paint making sure to coat the entire circular part of the sponge.
-Dab the excess onto the plate and then press the sponge onto your mug making sure the whole sponge presses against the mug.
-Repeat the last step randomly around your mug until you are satisfied with how it looks.
-Place your mug on a cookie sheet and put it in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
-Use hot mitts to take your mug out and let it cool off.
-Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while admiring your work
*I would recommend hand washing only.

I had this paint and the brushes on hand already, so in total this project cost me $2 , rather than $80. I believe the gold medal for savings goes to me if I say so myself!
What are some items that you would love to recreate for your home? Do you often find yourself replicating items that you find in the stores that are a little too pricey that you know you can DIY for way less?

A Good Nights Sleep

There are many things in this world that I love, one of them being my bed. Nothing is better than laying down on fresh sheets and a cozy comforter while stretching out after a long day of hard work. We all sleep...duhhh....but did you know that in order to get a completely restful nights sleep there are a few things that you should and should not do at certain times before hittin the hay? Follow this little guideline and I guarantee you will get a much better sleep than you did last night.

Other Tips:

-Try having a cup of green or chamomile tea after dinner
-Turn off the tv! The noise and the light both effect your sleep tremendously
-Try deep breathing. I know it sounds silly but for some people it really helps them relax. Learn how to do deep breathing HERE
-Doing work in bed is a big no no. There are only 2 things that you should be doing in your bed on a regular basis, and one of them is sleeping....
-Keep a pen and pad on your night stand. Try to write out whatever is on your mind before laying down to help clear your head
-A dark and cool room is the ideal condition for sleep, try turning down the thermostat
-Try to stick to a sleep schedule. I know that this is often hard to do but try to make it a habit of going to bed and waking up around the same time as often as possible

What helps you catch some zzzz's? Are you a light or a deep sleeper?
